Purple stemmed aster is typically found in moist meadows, stream banks and wetlands. This species has long bloom time and a strongly upright, clumping habit. Individuals are quite variable, with flower colors ranging from white to purple. It puts on an excellent, showy display, ideal for lower rain gardens, wetland plantings, pond edges, and any other moist, sunny locations.

One of the latest asters to bloom, Purple Stemmed Aster (Red Stem Aster, Swamp Aster) is invaluable as a pollinator plant. Plants host caterpillars of Silvery Checkerspot Butterfly, Pearl Crescent Butterfly and several different moths. It is especially valuable to native bees.
It has also been used medicinally, Native Americans used the roots of this species to treat fever, colds, typhoid, pneumonia, and toothache.
